DCW210
A removable 20V MAX battery powers a dust-protected I/O rocker, speed dial, electronic control, and brushless motor that drives an eccentric random-orbit mechanism under a replaceable 5-inch 8-hole hook-and-loop pad. Dust exits through aligned holes to a skirt and AirLock port with locking dust bag or compatible vacuum.

Model details
Model number: DCW210
Also known as: DCW210 Type 2, DEWALT DCW210 XR, 20V MAX XR 5-IN Variable-Speed Sander, DCW210 XR Random Orbit Sander, DCW210
Symptoms
- Swirl marks persist with a fresh correct disc
Visible swirl marks remain after using a fresh correct disc with light pressure and proper grit progression.
- Vibration is excessive with a centered disc
The tool shakes abnormally even though a fresh correct disc is centered and fully attached.
- Battery will not slide fully onto the tool rails
A compatible battery starts onto the handle but stops before the terminals seat and latch engages.
- Pad speed surges at a fixed dial setting
At no load and one fixed dial position, pad speed repeatedly rises and falls.
- Dust bag collar will not lock onto the dust port
The bag collar fits over the port but will not turn clockwise into a retained locked position.
- Pad speed rises dramatically when lifted from the work
Pad speed becomes abnormally high as soon as the running sander is lifted from the surface.
- Sanding pad has mechanical looseness at its mount
With the battery removed, the pad rocks, clunks, or has movement at the hub beyond normal orbital compliance.
- Abnormal drive-contact noise occurs while the pad turns
A repeatable grinding or scraping sound comes from beneath the tool while the pad turns.
- AirLock vacuum hose will not lock securely
A compatible AirLock-style hose connector will not retain on the dust port.
- Pad binds after pad-assembly service
After the published pad or belt procedure, the battery-removed pad binds when rotated by hand.
- Dust port is loose at the housing
The fixed dust port rocks or shifts relative to the tool housing when the connector is handled.
- Motor runs but the sanding pad does not orbit
Motor sound is present, but the pad has no visible random-orbit movement.
Failure Modes
- FM-32: Smoke emerges from the tool during operation
Smoke or a burning electrical odor comes from the sander body rather than the dust bag.
- FM-02: Sander stops and restarts with the switch left at I
At no load, the sander cuts out and resumes even though the I/O switch remains at I.
- FM-10: Pad speed surges at a fixed dial setting
At no load and one fixed dial position, pad speed repeatedly rises and falls.
- FM-04: Powered motion continues after the switch is set to O
Powered motor sound or sustained pad motion continues after O is selected and the normal brief coast-down should have ended.
- FM-13: Hook-and-loop pad face has physical damage
The pad face has flattened hooks, tears, missing areas, or heat damage visible with the disc removed.
- FM-21: Sander cuts out repeatedly under ordinary load
The tool runs at no load but repeatedly shuts off during normal light sanding.
- FM-11: Sanding disc will not adhere to the pad
A correct 5-inch hook-and-loop disc will not stay attached before the tool is started.
- FM-07: Latched battery will not release
The pack is latched but will not slide off when the release button is pressed.
- FM-06: Battery seats but will not latch
The pack reaches the seated position but can be pulled off without pressing the release button.
- FM-31: Tool housing has an open crack
A crack or separation opens the enclosure or exposes internal parts, rails, or wiring.
- FM-29: Dust collector begins to smolder
Smoke, glowing material, or a smoldering odor comes from collected sanding dust or the bag.
- FM-14: Sanding pad has mechanical looseness at its mount
With the battery removed, the pad rocks, clunks, or has movement at the hub beyond normal orbital compliance.
